Technique & Inspiration

As mentioned previously, I am rather unconventional in my technique. I use most of the common tools - brushes, palette knives and sponges mostly - but I use them as I see fit at the moment and without regard to how they should be used. It is the same with paints. I  mix things on the spur of the spur of the moment. More traditional artists would probably have a field day critiquing what I do. I have great respect for accomplished artists using traditional methods, but I cannot let other's opinions impede my work.

The best way to describe my style is to compare it to my writing. I have written and self-published three novels, and my style is very clearly in the form of stream-of-consciousness. I started all three novels with a basic story, often vague, and a few central characters. I then sat down and starting writing. I let my mind tell me what direction to go in. In no case did I have an specific ending toward which I was traveling. My painting is mostly just like that. I start with a basic idea and jump in. I may change direction a few times or quite a few times. I often don't know precisely where I am headed; I let the thoughts flow from my brain through my arms and hands.

                                                      Pricing of my Paintings

This is truly one of the most complicated issues for artists selling their works. Well, maybe not for everyone, but I believe it is an issue for most people. I have read lots of articles and seen plenty of videos on the subject. They tend to focus on the size of the paintings to come up with a pricing formula. That seems simple enough, but I struggle with that idea because we all know that for well-known and highly revered artists size doesn't mean very much. Consider the Mona Lisa, probably the most valuable painting in the world and it is quite small. Still, one has to have a basis, and for now my basis is size of the canvas. The difficulty is knowing what the starting point should be. I have mine, but I doubt I could explain it to anyone. Let's just say 'the market will determine the price'.

                                                        Delivery & Shipping

The prices for my artworks include shipping in most cases. There may be exceptions to this depending on the final destination and the size of the painting. I live in the Cincinnati Metro area, so for local purchase I can deliver the paintings. If a customer lives within about a 4-hour drive from Cincinnati I can deliver the work(s) myself. For longer distances  it is a matter of a reasonable direct cost by the shipping company.
